Artificial Intelligence as a Foundation for Semantic Technology

/

Semantic technology is a ‘meaning-centred’ software application. The software stores meaning separately from data, content and the application code, which allows the machine to recognise topics and concepts and to extract meaning from them.

The foundation of semantics is artificial intelligence (AI). AI is a decades old academic discipline. First described in the 1940s, it focuses on giving machines a ‘human-like’ intelligence. This includes concepts such as learning and problem-solving.

Understanding and Reasoning

One of the goals of artificial intelligence is to give robots the ability to understand and to reason. Semantic technology is just one step towards making this a reality. Since semantic technology encodes meaning into the content and data, it can actually mimic the ability of humans to understand and to reason.

Semantics allow machines to recognise separate entities and to categorise them. For example, in the sentence ‘Queen Elizabeth II, Head of the Commonwealth, arrives in a lime-green dress’, both ‘Queen Elizabeth II’ and ‘Commonwealth’ are considered entities.

An entity is an existing, distinct being or organisation. The lime-green dress is not an entity, but an object. Semantics is what allows a computer to recognise that the Queen and the Commonwealth are entities. The software ‘tags’ these entities with a specialised code.

Usually, most machines will not be able to separate the dress from the queen, as they can only store data, and not recognise them. Semantics are able to identify patterns and make something out of them.

Semantics in a Broader Scope

Since the goal of artificial intelligence is to create machines that can think and learn like humans, semantics is greatly focused on machine learning. In fact, we use semantics enabled software in our everyday lives now – search engines, such as Google, use some form of semantic technology to help users find websites. By using the keyword, the program can respond and understand otherwise complex human requests.
